Each course description lists the recommendations for each class, but generally the following items are a good idea to be prepared for a day on the water:
What's the registration deadline?
The registration deadline for SYCSS courses is 1 week prior to the start date.
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
Sailing is physical water-sport so you definitely need to be comfortable in and around the water. At a minimum, you should be able to swim 50 yards using any stroke and tread water for 2 minutes.
What happens on rainy days?
Classes are held rain or shine. Classes sail in the rain if the wind is not too strong or lightening is a threat, so students must bring rain gear and be prepared to sail. Appropriate on-shore activities will be conducted if sailing conditions are too severe.
What if we are going on vacation and will miss class?
If you know either you or your child will miss a class, please tell the instructor ahead of time. If you or your child will be missing several classes, please tell the Program Director. If you or your child are going to miss a significant amount of class time, you might want to consider a different class date or private lessons.
How may a sailor's progress in class be monitored?
Parents should communicate with their child's instructor before or after class time.
Can I watch my child sail? How can I get involved?
Parents are encouraged to speak with an instructor or the Program Director if they are looking for ways to become more involved or if they have any questions about their child's class.
May I bring a friend to class?
Unfortunately, due to liability, SYCSS can not allow guests. Medical reports, swim tests, enrollment fees, life jackets, knowledge of the water and boat availability all prevent guests from attending classes.
Are there instructor-in-training opportunities?
There are generally openings for several junior instructors. This is a position available to anyone wishing to assist new students with a trained instructor. Students wanting to help must be recommended by their instructor, chosen by merit.
